The Consultation Skill Many Stylists Overlook
Consultations are often seen as a quick conversation before a service begins, but they can be one of the most important parts of the entire appointment.
A thoughtful consultation helps both the stylist and the client feel confident about the service ahead. It creates an opportunity to clarify expectations, discuss goals, and ensure that everyone is aligned before work begins.
When consultations are rushed or skipped, misunderstandings can occur. Clients may expect a different outcome than what the stylist had in mind, which can lead to disappointment even when the technical work is well done.
Strong consultations usually include a few simple steps.
First, listening carefully to the client’s goals helps establish what they hope to achieve. This might include discussing the desired style, maintenance expectations, or how the service will fit into their regular routine.
Next, the stylist can share professional recommendations based on their experience. Explaining why certain approaches work better than others helps clients understand the reasoning behind the service.
Finally, confirming the plan before beginning ensures that both the stylist and the client feel comfortable moving forward.
Consultations don’t need to be long, but they should always be intentional. A few minutes of thoughtful conversation at the beginning of an appointment can help prevent confusion and lead to better results for everyone involved.
Many of these professional skills are rarely taught in traditional training programs, yet they play a major role in building a sustainable career behind the chair.
That’s why we created the Professional Foundations Core Training Series inside the Collective—to support stylists in developing the habits and systems that help their businesses grow.
